Energy along with carbon dioxide are produced when natural gas is burnt and those unwanted carbon dioxide lead to the climate change after released into the atmosphere. Hydrogen is a better and ‘cleaner’ option of providing energy since water vapor is the only waste product of combusting hydrogen gas. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in Universe but it does not naturally occur on Earth in its gaseous state. Therefore, H2 gas is needed on a large scale since it is a clean energy source and also be largely used in the laboratory for a variety of lab applications. For examples, it is used to synthesis cyclohexane, ammonia and methanol in chemical industry. It is used for hydrogenation of oils to form fats in the food industry and also used as fuel or carrier gas in Gas Chromatography (GC) and as a collision gas in ICP-MS.
The components of water are hydrogen and oxygen which have many applications in different fields and industries. Therefore, decomposing the water molecule is a popular method to generate clean, renewable and efficient fuel source-the hydrogen and oxygen gas. And this process is called Water Electrolysis, conducted by passing an electric current through the water to decompose it into hydrogen and oxygen.
The electrolysis reaction takes place in the electrolyser cell when continuous voltage is applied on it.
At the anode (the positively charged electrode), four hydrogen ions and one oxygen molecule are formed when the water molecules lose two electrons. This is the oxidation of H2O.
2H2O(l)→O2(g) + 4H+ + 4e-
The four hydrogen ions produced in this half reaction then pass through the ion exchange membrane (IEM) since they were attracted by the negatively charged cathode. The four H+ ions then reduced by 4 electrons to form two hydrogen molecules at the cathode. And this is the reduction of H+.
4H+ + 4e- → 2H2(g)
The net reaction of the electrolysis of water is given as:
2H2O(l)→O2(g) + 2H2(g)
where one oxygen gas molecule and 2 hydrogen gas molecules were produced by discomposing two water molecules under electrolysis.
A hydrogen gas generator is a convenient, safe and more cost-effective alternative to using the high pressure cylinder of H2. It provide hydrogen of a consistent purity, eliminating the risk of variation in gas quality from water electrolysis, which can impact on analytical results.
Advantage of using Hydrogen gas generator:
